Motor Skills Classes Toddler Gym in Midlothian

As children grow from babies to toddlers and preschoolers, they develop essential fine and gross motor skills through movement and physical exercise. Allowing children to explore new activities and exercise their bodies is an excellent way to strengthen those motor skills. Still, it can sometimes put a lot of stress on a caretaker when kids start doing things like climbing on the furniture or making messes.

If you're looking for a way to encourage your child's development that doesn't involve constantly watching to ensure they don't hurt themselves, check out our toddler gym in Midlothian! Our classes are a perfect way to encourage motor skill development in unique, fun and safe ways. Your kids won't realize they're learning and working because they'll have so much fun. Enroll your child in a class today!

What are Fine and Gross Motor Skills?

You might have heard these terms before, but what do they mean? Knowing the definition of fine and gross motor skills can help you encourage their development within your child.

Fine Motor Skills

Fine motor movements involve the smaller muscles of the body, mainly the muscles in the hands, wrist, and fingers. Manual dexterity is needed when coordinating the motion of these muscles, which takes time and practice to grow and strengthen.

Gross Motor Skills

Gross motor movements involve the larger body muscles, including arm, leg, back, and core abdomen muscles. Making these bigger muscles move requires more energy.

This mom and child play with a ball at Romp n' Roll Midlothian's toddler gym in Midlothian.

Motor Skills Through Childhood Development

Children will develop and strengthen their motor skills at different times as they grow. Understanding when your child should learn these skills will help you keep them on track. We offer classes at our toddler gym in Midlothian for each of these age groups.

Babies (3 - 12 Months)
  • Fine motor skills: Bringing fingers to mouth, moving objects between hands, squeezing toys, and developing pincer grasp (using index finger and thumb to grasp something).
  • Gross motor skills: Rolling over, holding up the head, sitting up, and crawling.
Toddlers (1 - 3 Year-olds)
  • Fine motor skills: Building block towers, clapping and waving, turning pages, holding crayons correctly, and turning doorknobs.
  • Gross motor skills: Climbing onto furniture, walking, running, jumping, and throwing toys.
Young Children (4 - 5 Year-olds)
  • Fine motor skills: folding paper, getting dressed without help, using utensils correctly, and tying shoelaces.
  • Gross motor skills: Catching a ball, walking up stairs, hopping on one foot, and kicking a rolling ball.
