Art is the primary medium through which young children express their thoughts, feelings, and fantasies. Through exciting and enjoyable projects, they depict their unique perception of the world around them. Furthermore, such projects motivate them to attempt, practice, and perfect a wide variety of skills that are essential to the educational process. As the refine their fine motor (small muscle) abilities, explore the process of symbolization, experiment with different materials, problem-solve with various procedures, and communicate through a multitude of techniques, they strengthen the foundations for success in school and throughout life. And they give their parents and others incredibly useful insight regarding how their minds work as well as a wonderful window into their souls. It is through art that young children not only gain the intellectual capacities to better understand how the world works, but also are encouraged to develop the imaginative and creative capacities to figure out how to make the world a better place in the future.
