It is impossible to underrate the importance of imagination in children’s educational development. Think about it. If all our ancestors simply passed on the knowledge and skills they possessed, we would still be stuck in the Stone Age. While competent minds enable society to function, it is the innovative minds among us that allow society to flourish and progress. When young children engage in a wide variety of fun, imaginative play activities, they are able to take whatever concepts and principles they have absorbed, refine and strengthen them, and figure out how to adapt them to all sorts of objects, situations, and scenarios where they might also be applicable and useful. Furthermore, it is through such activities in which peers are playmates rather than competitors that children learn to relate well to others, communicate effectively, and cooperate in endeavors that lead to exciting, fulfilling results for all. Formal instruction may provide children with what they need to get through today, but it is imaginative play that prepares children for the unknown challenges of tomorrow allows them to be leaders rather than mere followers in the future.
